At ORA we believe that we are here to share the earth with our fellow animals and to live in harmony and peace with every species. We believe that humans do not have the right to abuse, exploit, use and consume other animals. Unfortunately the reality is quite different. Humans have taken over our planet. They have destroyed and they continue to destroy the habitat of other animals, driving them into extinction or condemning them to a miserable existence at the margin of human communities. Our profit driven society views animals in terms of the benefits that they can provide for humans: so animals are consumed as food, used in research, used for human entertainment, circuses, hunting etc. We believe that humans do not have the right to exploit animals. Because we humans have been given the ability to transform our environment and we have used this ability to destroy the habitat of others animals, we have now a moral obligation to take care of and to protect our weaker fellow animals. If we do not do just that we cannot call ourselves "civilized". This credo is at the basis of the actions of ORA and is shared by our members and by our volunteers.
SOMETHING ABOUT OUR NAME Our name, Organization for the Rescue of Animals, has been selected so that our abbreviation would spell "ORA". ORA in Latin means "pray". No matter what religion you belong to, or if you are atheist or agnostic, working for the animals can be a unifying element for humans, above any social, religious or economical difference. When you work for the animals out of compassion and love, you are in harmony and in peace with nature. This is in our vision, the highest form of prayer. Furthermore, by becoming more sensitive and more empathetic towards the plight of animals, we humans can learn to become more sensitive and more empathetic toward each other, thereby eliminating many problems and human suffering caused by intransigency and insensitivity.
